Murder, mayhem, and an inappropriate attraction.
Sean McMillan has always lived a life more human than shifter. Upon joining Alpha Squad he is thrust into a whole new world which is taking some getting used to. When two shifters turn up dead under suspicious circumstances in the otherwise quiet town of Inverness, Scotland, Alpha Squad is sent in to uncover the truth. So far, so easy; murder investigations are what Sean does best. Trouble is, one of the witnesses is able to distract him just with her presence. And he can’t shake the feeling that she knows more than what she’s letting on.
Lab assistant Erin Reid thought her work at the research project led by leading Geneticist Professor Blake was benign enough, if excruciatingly boring. Little did she knows that they were all embroiled in a deadly conspiracy. When she finds out what she’s been involved in, the resulting guilt weighs heavily on her and she vows to make things right and help Sean’s investigation in any way she can.
What starts off as an ordinary murder investigation quickly turns into something bigger and more dangerous than anyone on Alpha Squad could foresee. Is shifter enemy No. 1, Victor Domnall, back with a plan more devious than ever? Can Sean and Erin put all the pieces of the puzzle together before it’s too late? And what about that inexplicably deep connection they’ve started to form ever since their first meeting?

Sean McMillan is not like the other shifter members of the Alpha Squad, but he doesn’t try to let it hinder his relationship with them, nor his ability to do good work. But then it’s time to go to Scotland to investigate the dubious deaths of shifters. To the outside world, it’s a natural occurrence. But shifters don’t get sick. They don’t turn ill. And they don’t die of heart failure.
Lab assistant, Erin Reid is a classic Scottish beauty who captures Sean’s attention more than he cares to admit. Even he doesn’t understand the pull until it’s too late, and they’re both suddenly tumbling down this road of possibilities and danger. They both must figure out what is going on before something inescapable happens, but with the Alpha Squad on the job, it shouldn’t be too hard.
So this is the end (for now), folks. I’ve enjoyed the series so far, particularly the first one because it was set in a military boot camp. It was exciting, the style fit the mood, and I liked seeing the guy get the girl, despite circumstances. The second one brought a little more excitement when it was time for the Alpha Squad to go on their first mission. Finally, you think. They’re out in the world.
The third one turned to a different kind of excitement, where instead of the danger out there, you’re worried about the danger within. With this fourth and last (-ish) installment, the excitement turns its danger once more in another direction. This time… it’s toward the world. Sounds good, right? Unfortunately, it wasn’t for me. While I loved the world already created, this one- for God knows why -just didn’t hook me quite as much. The writing seemed fast-faced, I couldn’t get into the characters (though Erin was kind of adorable, I must say) and the excitement didn’t really come until more than halfway into the book. What probably made me disconnect from this, however, was the romance. I could totally see Erin and Sean, but their sudden connection was a miss for me.
But hey! It wasn’t for me. It may be for you. Check it out if you love bear shifter romances and the underdogs scoring more than once, for once lol.
