Just because Kate ‘Middleton’ McGrath wants a man to call ‘daddy’ in bed, doesn’t mean —
Oh, you stopped reading. Cool.
Kate gets it. Kinks aren’t for everyone. Hell, they’re probably not for Mr. Henderson, her grumpaholic boss. She really shouldn’t have a crush on him, but the man is just so goddamn stern. Sure, a lot of that comes down to ‘being her boss,’ but still, it feels like there might be something there.
Tyler Henderson is a golden boy who’s lost his shine. He’s old, his dream career is over, his fiancee’s left him. Now all the former firefighter can do is try to bury his troubles in paperwork and hard liquor. He says ‘try’ because he can’t get Middleton out of his head long enough to wallow properly. He’s not going anywhere near the girl. HR issues aside, he’s done with sweetness and things don’t come sweeter than a cupcake-baking engineer who knits her own hats.
A case of mistaken identity causes Kate and Ty’s attraction to give way to blistering sex. They have more in common- and more to lose -than either of them realized. When it comes to attraction, you can rarely change your mind, but can you act your age?

This was great. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that had a pair of MCs who liked RP (roleplay) but they do and even better, they enjoy the aspects in each other that the other does not, mainly due to wondering if it’s as perverted as society would have us all think.
The story started off funny enough with that low key danger mixed in with an ‘oops’ moment. You already know both have the hots for each other but they don’t act on it just yet, not until something happens, at least. The pacing was good. The first time it slowed down for me, I wondered about it, because I’m enjoying the sex and the hurricane of ‘what-ifs’, but by the time it happened again for the both of them, I pleasantly realized how in-depth this actually was. I’ve read everything of this author so far and am used to the deliciously long but fast story of heated sexathons and intense emotions, but with Kate and Tyler, it’s a slow burn. They’re already beyond into each other, but what it all comes down to is whether or not they should act on it. They worry, and as you read about their growing closeness, you also get a deeper look into why they are the way they are. It ended up being pretty heady and heavy, like a giant fat cat that decides to plot itself right on your chest as you’re sitting by the fire.
It just seemed really good to go from what you assume is all about sex and emotions running high to some seriously serious people looking to keep things under control and not go crazy. Like Tyler. He’s an older gentleman, someone who used to be a firefighter before he ended up with a career in engineering. He’s commanding, efficient, and everyone loves him. Except himself.
Yes, he knows he’s pretty good, but when you first get into his POV, he totally gives off the slight puppy dog pout because of his (sorta recent) break-up, the demands of his family, and his attraction to Katie and the fact that he’s old enough to be her father. Awww. Plus he’s a hoot when it comes to sarcasm. I couldn’t help but feel bad for him when he grumbled but at the same time, he ended up being really endearing.
Katie was just something else. At first you think she’s just really peppy and sweet and the girl every guy loves to call BFF but when you read further in, a lot of other stuff gets revealed. I won’t say for spoilers’ sake, but I did enjoy her character development. I think it was the best thing about this book, if not the sex itself.
Their co-workers and derby teammates were cool, and though I got enough from the co-workers they interacted with, I really enjoyed seeing Katie’s mates. They were all so different. They had their own defining personalities and supported her in their own ways, but best of all, the best of them were really there for her when she needed it. Heart!
I loved what they all brought and thought they really made the ending part of the book so much more awesome. I liked the way it ended, thought it was an overall hot and funny read. It pretty much left me with the feels and it’s a definite recommended read if you wanna try out MCs who roleplay and explore the more ‘kinky’ parts of themselves while challenging society’s expectations in life.
