A Thing About Bad Reviews…

Dear Reader,

So I need a little heart-to-heart for a quick second. I just finished a book written by one of my favorite authors, and the reason she’s a favorite is because of how much she does for my perspective on love. I’m a ‘burn the bridge’ type of person, not a very forgiving woman really if something hurts me bad enough. But when I read her books, and I read about her heroes and heroines fucking up and trying everything and then some to make up for it, it makes me believe that there are forever loves in the world. That there are people- or at least that one couple -who love and love forever.

Yes, her heroines are generally forgiving and sweet and innocent. Sometimes, even naive. But they aren’t dumb. They aren’t doormats. And they certainly aren’t whores just because they choose to forgive their heroes or can’t say no to touches and kisses that belong to someone they feel is their other half. I mean, how rude can you be?

The reason for this little rant is because I just finished a book of hers and went to review it, and instead of minding my own business, I noticed one of the lower-rating reviews. Normally, I don’t read those, because I know that not everyone will ever have a nice thing to say about a book, especially one written by someone whose work I highly admire and appreciate. But when I actually read the review, I couldn’t believe it. Hell, I couldn’t believe several things.

  • they called the heroine pathetic
  • they said she was too dumb to live
  • they called her a whore

There are other things but I stopped at these because… for one, I just couldn’t believe that someone could be so hurtful with their words. I honestly could not believe that someone could be so cruel to a character I found to be terribly sweet and fragile. It bothers me because there are some women out there like this heroine, and for someone like this reviewer to say such nasty things does not sit right with me, because if they’re calling this heroine such things, they’re basically calling other women the same thing.

And that isn’t okay.

I could say a lot of things about the reviewer but because I was raised better, I can only say that this person was either hurt by the book and didn’t know how to channel that hurt and anger, or is just a sad, pathetic person who has all my sympathy. I truly hope they find some happiness.

This isn’t me telling you how to review a book you read, but I highly suggest you all do it with constructive criticism and helpful opinions. If something really bothers you, feel free to express yourself because others will feel the same, but explain why you felt hurt by this. Explain why you reacted this or that way. Be a positive person who says whether or not a book was bad and why, but don’t be that person that spreads hate and negativity. No one really wants that.

I recommend you reading a book or two of Marian Tee’s. They’re very hot and different and often times dark and heartbreaking, but they also teach about different types of love, and the need for forgiveness and understanding someone when they’re in pain. They teach you to think a little differently, to go after the person you love rather than delete them from your life. You fell in love with them for a reason, didn’t you? Love doesn’t just go away because you want it to. If there’s anything Tee taught me, it’s that love has no limits. And I don’t know about you, but I’d rather be a person who limits herself on drinks and junk food, and not on my capacity for love and forgiveness.

So please. Be nice to the books and authors you review.

Happy Reading,

A Little Darling

The Wild, K Webster

I brought them to the wilderness because we couldn’t cope with our reality.
The plan was to make a new life that didn’t include heartache.

No people. No technology. No interference.
Just us.
A chance to piece together what was broken.

But the wilderness is untamed and harsh.
Brutal and unforgiving.
It doesn’t give a damn about your feelings.

Tragedy lives there too.
No escaping the truths that won’t let you go.

All you can do is survive where love, no matter how beastly, is the only thing you can truly count on.

Confusing. Wrong. Twisted. Beautiful. Sick.

Love is wild.
And we’re going to set it free.

The Wild is an extremely taboo story. Most will find that the themes in this book will make you incredibly uncomfortable. This book is only for the brave, the open-minded, and the ones who crave love in even the most dismal of situations. Extreme sexual themes and violence in certain scenes, which could trigger emotional distress, are found in this story. If you are sensitive to heavy taboo themes, then this story is not for you.

A servant. A thief. A submissive.

Masquerading as a parlor maid and entrenched in the Duke of Montague’s estate, Liz is willing to risk all to uncover the secrets that would save her sister.

But submitting to the duke’s peculiar brand of discipline surprises her with a heady mixture of pleasure and pain. Eager to relinquish control of her messy life, Liz soon craves the rough hands of Montague and his powerful, passionate attentions. Can she succumb to the hot sting of his hand and the gentleness of his kisses without revealing her true identity and darkest secrets? And what punishment will she face when he realizes her betrayal?

He looked down at the woman beside him, eating as sparingly as a bird. She was his responsibility, too, but one that wasn’t a burden. He craved to take her in hand, give her the calm purpose that a disciplined mind could achieve.

He forced his muscles to relax. Because of their different stations, that wasn’t possible. So he would make sure she was safe and healthy, and discipline himself not to touch her.

She didn’t eat everything on the plate before she sat back with a hand to her stomach, but it was a good start, he decided. Marcus filled another small plate with fruit and held it up to her.

“No more.” She shook her head. “I couldn’t possibly eat another bite.”

“Every meal needs a little dessert to finish it.” He picked up a ripe strawberry and held it to her lips. “Open up.”

Eyes on his, she slowly opened her mouth, and all the blood in Marcus’s body rushed south. When her small white teeth bit into the red flesh, he nearly groaned. Shifting his legs, he held up another morsel. Bit by bit she ate the fruit he fed her.

Why had he never fed a woman before? This was quickly becoming one of the most sensuous experiences in his life. Her little moans of appreciation thrummed through his body. Each time her pink tongue darted out to lap at the juice on her lip his stomach clenched. Her warm breath caressed his fingers, making him wonder what it would feel like if her breath caressed other parts of him. The black of her eyes and heaving of her chest told him she wasn’t immune to the experience, either.

He held up a bit of melon, the juice running down his fingers. He brushed her lips with the peach-colored fruit. Instead of opening up for him, she wrapped her fingers around his wrist and stared at him. Her eyes were a plea, a question.

He put the plate of food down. “Miss Smith. Elizabeth.”

“Liz. Please call me Liz. It’s been so long since anyone has.”

“Liz.” He cupped her face, his thumbs tracing her cheekbones. “This isn’t right. You’re my servant. You might feel obligated to me because of our relative positions.”

“I don’t feel obligated.” A wrinkle appeared between her eyebrows. “I don’t know what it is I’m feeling exactly, but it isn’t that.”

His heart skipped. He was on the edge of a cliff. He shouldn’t take that leap, but, god, he wanted to. “What is it you want?”

Her cheeks heated under his hands, and she bit her lip. He tilted her head to face his better. “Look at me. Tell me what you want, but remember, all actions have consequences.”

She lowered her gaze to his lips, took a deep breath. “I want you to kiss me,” she whispered.

He hadn’t expected her to be so forthright. So honest. Pain pierced his heart, and he didn’t know if the woman in front of him was opening a hole in his heart or filling one. Her face ran the gamut of emotions. Longing and hope. Fear that he might reject her. Curiosity over what she was feeling. He saw her, and she was beautiful.

She was a magnet, drawing him in. His lips hovered above hers for an instant, inhaling the breath she released. He brushed his mouth against hers, once, twice, before pulling back to look at her again. Her eyes were closed, lips slightly parted, looking for all the world like a woman aching to be touched.

Sod it all to hell. He crushed his mouth to hers and drank of her like she was a spring and he was dying of thirst.

Dear Reader,

This trilogy of Cam and Thea’s story has been a pretty dramatic ride of intense romance. When I first got into this, I admired the way they were so complicated but so easy with each other. Their attraction was obviously more than the bedroom and I really liked that they were as hot for each other as they were obsessed. Well, as obsessed as Cam was, anyway. He’s a very complex guy who had his scary moments but this book explains why he is the way he is (finally) and it only made me love him more… and want to strangle Thea lol.

Cam’s been locked up for breaking the rules, but where Thea’s concerned, no such boarders exist. Still, with his butt in hot water, he has no choice but to face the demons he can’t slice and dice with his weapons. He has to start dealing with what he’s been avoiding, because it’s his future with Thea on the line, now. And he definitely can’t risk that. Meanwhile, Thea’s having a hard time adjusting with all these new things thrown at her. She’s becoming a better angel, but after the attack that left her physically and emotionally hurting, it won’t matter if she has the best angels to watch her back. Can’t help someone who doesn’t want to be helped, after all. Both of them have a lot to deal with, and while it’s always back and forth with these two, I still found myself liking them a little more with every page. Thea bugged me in this one when I felt like she was being mean but I also had to remind myself that she went through a lot. It was hard lol mainly because I wanted Cam to STOP HURTING OH MY GOD- but yeah. The big reveal was pretty intense. I didn’t want to see the ending, but I’m glad it ended the way it did.

I thought Ellis did a great job on her series so far (I hear there’s a spin-off!) and I really appreciated the emotional turmoil I got whenever I had to deal with Cam’s near stalker status and Thea’s… I don’t even know what you’d call it… human heart? Their romance gave me feels, the demonic bit gave me thrills, and I was overall left satisfied. Check it out if you love paranormal romance!
