Ghosts and Grudges, Jasmine Walt + J.A. Cipriano

ghosts

A hidden world. An ancient power. A trio of hunky, dangerous shamans.

What could possibly go wrong?

When an ancient spirit awakens a hidden ability within Aika, grateful is the last word that comes to her mind. Being able to summon monsters and spirits to do your bidding might sound cool in comic books, but in real life it brings nothing but trouble. And between chasing after a medical degree, caring for her ailing mother, and running the family business, she’s got plenty to deal with.

Unfortunately, Aika doesn’t have the luxury of ignoring her new abilities. An ancient, powerful evil has taken her mother, and the only way to free her is for Aika to embrace her heritage. Luckily, a couple of hunky shamans have recently taken an interest in Aika, whose abilities are unique from others of her kind. They’re willing to train her, and even fight by her side.

But the more time Aika spends with her guys, the more she realizes that they might not be what they seem. The truth is just out of reach, and once Aika uncovers it, she’ll either find the key to saving their world…

… or destroy the best thing she’s ever had.

If you can’t stand the idea of a girl having relationships with multiple guys and who does NOT have to choose between them, this book is not for you. There’s also a sprinkling of swear words, some hot kissing and sexual tension, and plenty of action scenes. You have been warned!

Dear Reader,

Another book with Japanese lore! I absolutely love reading about Japanese myths and monsters because I used to be addicted to anime as a kid (current status shall never be revealed) so you can imagine my excitement when I saw that shamans were gonna be a big thing in this series. And it’s a Shaman Queen series! I’m so excited! Who else is getting Shaman King flashbacks? Think there’ll be a duel? *tee hee*

It started off well enough. Grounded college girl struggling to get her degree and take care of her cancer-ridden mother while running the family restaurant. I liked that she was sensible and had a sense of responsibility. Then when everything went to hell, I just kept laughing at her thinking, ‘This poor girl’. She did suck the fun out of it sometimes, but I couldn’t really blame her, considering she relied on her plan to make things work. Hot guys and killer ghosts were definitely not part of it.

As a reverse harem, I thought it did alright. Not nearly as convincing for this reader, because Aika had serious chemistry with Raiden while (what felt like) randomly craving Shota. I get that she knew Shota longer, but it just didn’t feel right. I think if she’d been more forthcoming with her emotions and inner thoughts, I wouldn’t have felt like it came out of nowhere. And don’t even get me started on Kai…

Drama-wise, it was way up there. Especially when Kai came into play. lol. A few times, it felt like things were being tried a little too hard, but it’s either because I’m technically reading a new author or because I just have these weirdly high expectations of books that deal with Japanese myths and flare. I’ve read some books that totally hit the nail, and I just assumed this would be like them.

Will I read the second book? Hell, yes. At first, I didn’t know how to enjoy this. Aika was stressing everyone out with her need to save okaasan and fight them every which way to be normal again, but then they started doing these adventures, and the light bulb went off in my head like, “Oh, take it like an adventure novel!” And then the story flowed a lot easier from there. The thing was fairly predictable, and Aika took some getting used to, but in the end, it was an overall entertaining read that made me happy to see some Asian myths again.

Happy Reading,

A Little Darling

Dragon’s Gift, Jasmine Walt & May Sage

gift

Dareena Sellis is a nobody. The orphaned daughter of a no-name farmer, she toils away as a serving girl at Hallowdale Inn, her only marriage prospects either shipping off to war, or pawing at her skirts with their grubby, gnarled hands.

But fate takes a strange turn the day a dragon huntress comes to town. Suddenly, Dareena is swept off to Dragon’s Keep, trading in her raggedy dresses for silken gowns, her closet-sized room for feather pillows and spacious gardens, and her miserable suitor for three very handsome, very virile dragon princes.

For Dareena is not a nobody. She is the Dragon’s Gift — the one woman chosen by the gods every century to bear children for the future king of Dragonfell.

Despite her pre-ordained path, Dareena’s fate is far from certain. The crown has not given birth to more than one son in nearly a thousand years, and the line of succession is far from clear. Neither of the princes are willing to cede Dareena to the other, and yet she must choose. For the enemy is knocking on Dragonfell’s door, and Dareena’s decision could either mean the kingdom’s salvation…

…or annihilation.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
This is a TRUE reverse harem romance, NOT a love triangle. Expect to see danger, intrigue, hot sex, strong language, and fire-breathing dragons between the pages of this book. For +18 readers. You have been warned!

Author’s Note:
This is a spin-off series following the events of Scorched by Magic, book 7 in the Baine Chronicles series. While you are not required to have read the previous series to enjoy this one, it is highly recommended that you do.
Unlike the Baine Chronicles, which is written from Sunaya’s POV, this spin-off is written in dual first person POV — in other words, from the viewpoints of both Fenris and Mina. Sunaya’s series contains foul language, violence, and some adult situations, whereas Fenris’s story has tamer language but much more romance.
